Thanks to Quinn at Quinn’s Book Nook, I discovered April’s 15 Day Book Blogger Challenge at Good Books and Good Wine. Each day has a different prompt, though anyone can jump in at any time. It’s a great way to get to know each other as well as explore different topics that I might not have touched on. The 15 different challenges are:
Today is Day 2: What is your bedtime reading ritual?
I am extremely ritualistic. I like having a routine. I typically feel a little bit out of sorts if my routine is shaken. I’m not completely like Sheldon Cooper of the Big Bang Theory, but I am pretty darn close. (This is the point that if I knew how to find gifs and memes, I’d have one of Sheldon. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet developed that internet skill, and honestly, gifs make me stare at them for an embarrassingly long time, like something is suddenly going to change.)
So for my bedtime routine, things are pretty standard and regular. I have always been someone who likes to get as much sleep as possible so that means that I go to bed a lot earlier than other people. Generally around 8-9 I start getting ready for bed, doing all the typical shower and changing into pajamas. My bed has to be turned down just so, so that comforter is folded in a way that when it falls off the end as it always does, it can easily be pulled back on when I make the bed in the morning. My fan has to be turned on, both for the white noise and the air circulation. I can’t sleep without air circulation. The TV gets turned off and I my little bedside lamp is turned on. Sometimes, a glass of milk is nice. Then I settle in and begin reading whatever book it is that I’m currently reading. I typically have only one physical book going at a time and it always has it’s designated spot on my bedside table. I use several pillows to prop myself up and then I read for about an hour. It can vary on how exciting the book is or not how much I actually get read. There’s quite a few books where I can only read two pages before my eyes start to close. The important thing here is that once your eyes start to close, it’s time to quit and go to sleep. If you miss that moment, and force yourself awake, you won’t be able to get to sleep when you want to. It’s a balancing act. 😛
