FYI: Pern Museum and Archives

I haven’t posted any reviews of Pern books here, but I will wholeheartedly admit to being a lover of Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern world.

dragonsdawnPerhaps you haven’t heard of this magnificent world? Some argue that the series is fantasy, as many of the books tell a story of humans living on a strange world where dragons exist and barely any technology remains. But then others argue that the origin of this society is supremely science fiction. Humans reached this planet through space travel; many years of intergalactic wars and alien lifeform cooperation and conflict had already happened. The people who coloniz Pern came to it to escape from such conflict and create an agrarian society. Dragons were developed through scientific research. And the overarching threat to society, Thread, has a scientific (though some even argue that the science is fuzzy) basis.

It’s a world that spans many books and Anne’s son has helped to take up the Pern torch and continue stories within this world. I love the series because of the different cultures that exist within it (Hold vs. Hall vs. Weyr). And of course…I’d friggen love to be a dragonrider.

I say all of this because through a lovely member of the Sword and Laser book club on Goodreads, I have discovered an awesome site with great resources and artwork. In particular, I really enjoyed the fan art done by Linda Eicher. I wish I could create art like that!

So just an FYI, this is a pretty cool site and you should check it out if you enjoy McCaffrey’s Pern.

What do you think?
