Book News: Goodreads Joining the Amazon Family

BREAKING NEWS!      BREAKING NEWS!      BREAKING NEWS!

Early yesterday evening, I got the news from the Sword and Laser book club on Goodreads. Later I saw the announcement.

Goodreads is joining the Amazon family.

The Goodreads announcement gives some detail. According to their announcement, they are ‘joining the family’; maintaining their independent culture and some of their original vision, but with increased integration with Amazons’ products, particularly the Kindle. They state multiple times that users have asked for this integration with eReaders and that this new partnership will bring it.

According to the press release, it’s a little bit more than just a partnership. Amazon has acquired Goodreads.

However there is some concern within the Goodreads community that some of the credibility of Goodreads might be lost depending on the actual influence of Amazon. Will Amazon allow authors to link to other booksellers? Some believe that it would be of no benefit to Amazon to do so. Others say that it would keep Goodreads’ users happy and they would still potentially get affiliate fees. Also, what will happen to all the reviews. There has been reports that Amazon deleted a lot of reviews off of their site under the belief that they were sock puppet reviews, but that authentic material was lost in the process.

And what about the new cap on friends on 5,000? Friends of Neil Gaiman have been cut off; those not reaching the 5,000 cap were made fans instead. Is that an action already due to this new ‘partnership’? Or was it separate?

I don’t handle change very well, and Goodreads is my favorite site. I’ll be apprehensive to see what changes will happen. But I think I will definitely get around to backing up all my reviews on there now to make sure.

What do you think?

  • It’s going to be interesting to see what happens. Hopefully it will just be small changes on the Goodreads side because it will be detrimental to Amazon to annoy us Goodread lovers :)

    • Playing Jokers says:

Yeah. I know that the main guess is that the links to the smaller bookseller websites on Goodreads will disappear to only show the option of buying the book from Amazon. Of course people can just do a search on their own if they want to use a non-Amazon seller, but there is some thought that it could be detrimental to the other options.
